This is probably the most asked question in history. At least in my mind it is. The 1828 Dictionary (just about the only dictionary my school uses) says:
In a general sense to be pleased with; to regard with affection, on account of some qualities which excite pleasing sensations or desire of gratification. We love a friend, on account of some qualities which give us pleasure in his society. We love a man who has done us a favor; in which case, gratitude enters into the composition of our affection. We love our parents and our children, on account of their connection with us, and on account of many qualities which please us. We love to retire to a cool shade in summer. We love a warm room in winter. we love to hear an eloquent advocate. The christian loves his Bible. In short, we love whatever gives us pleasure and delight, whether animal or intellectual; and if our hearts are right, we love God above all things, as the sum of all excellence and all the attributes which can communicate happiness to intelligent beings. Is that all love is? Something that "gives us pleasure and delight"?
I guess in a way it is, but what about Jane Eyre? Mr. Rochester sure doesn't give Jane pleasure. Sure, when they are engaged he gives her delight, but what about when she was falling in love with him?
Jason Mraz's song You and I Both says
Cause you and I both loved
What you and I spoke of
And others just read of
Others only read of the love, the love that I love.
What you and I spoke of
And others just read of
Others only read of the love, the love that I love.
And what about those THOUSANDS of romantic movies, books, songs, poems, etc, etc, etc, that talk about the power of love. Yes, I am perfectly aware of the fact that I sound like a ball of cheese, but I can't help it. I am a desperately romantic teenage girl who can't help but marvel at true love. I wish that I could only get the tiniest taste of true love, but, sadly, I probably won't even meet my significant other 'til college. Boring.
I don't want to have a love story like everyone else. I don't want to just "meet him at college" or "be friends with him through high school", I want to have a spontaneous and irresistible love, one that others only wish of having.
Thank you for reading my mindless babblings.
